Our March tour combines the major sites on the mainland plus four days on the islands of Santorini and Crete. The itinerary is only an outline at this point and can be adjusted to accommodate any particular interests you and the group may have. The price is an estimate but off by no more than $100 either way. We won't know the final price until we start reserving rooms and buying tickets for the ferries.
After breakfast in the hotel, we set out for a full day near the Acropolis. We visit the Acropolis itself and finish our morning with a visit to the truly exceptional New Museum of the Acropolis, where the the artistic artifacts recovered from the Acropolis are on display. After lunch and a rest, we make our way to the Agora, the central market place of the city of Athens, and on to our date with our friend Theo and Vahan at their rug shop. After that, dinner in the Plaka and back to the hotel.
After more sight seeing in Athens (your decision of the many things we could see), we catch a ferry to the island of Santorini. We arrive at our hotel on the island in the evening.
We have a full day on Santorini, to include visits to Akrotiri, the Middle Bronze town that was buried in the volcano that tore the island apart in about 1650. the Red Beach, and picturesque village Ea.
We have another half day on Santorini, during which we tour the Minoan Museum and the Black Beach. Then we catch an afternoon ferry to Heraklio in Crete about miles to the south.
We visit the lavish Minoan palace of Knossos and the resort town of Matala on the southern coast of Crete. Our dinner is an authentic Cretan restaurant in the remote village of Drossia, where they serve only what they grow on their own land nearby.
In the morning, we visit the Minoan Museum and the Museum of Ancient Technology in the afternoon, both in Heraklio. We catch an overnight ferry from Heraklio back to Athens.
After our arrival in Athens, we begin our swing through the mainland, starting with visits to the Hellenistic Theater of Epidaurus and Mycenae. We overnight in the quaint resort city of Nafplio.
After our tour of the sites in the Argolid in Epidaurus and Corinth, we cross the Peloponnese to Olympia.
We tour the extensive remains of Olympia, the site of the Ancient Games in the morning, and then we travel north to Delphi.
Delphi was the location of the most revered prophetic sanctuary of Apollo. We visit the site and view the impressive remains in the local museums. After lunch we head into the mountains of central Greece, a regions once called Roumeli. Our destination Kalambaka, the village at the site of Meteora.
At Meteora, we visit the monasteries that are almost miraculously perched on the peaks of cliffs. Lunch is at a family owned restaurant just north of Meteora called "The Bird's Nest, which features local cuisine. We drive north into Macedonia for our stop at the small village of Vergina.
At Vergina, we visit the tomb of Philip II, the father of Alexander the Great, which was built directly over the site where the tomb cluster was excavated. After which we return south, pass by Mt. Olympus, and stop for the night at the resort city of Kamena Vourla.
From Kamena Vourla, you make your connections for your flights out of Greece at the Athens airport. Since we'll be driving to the airport from about 60 miles away, don't book flights out before around 11 AM in the morning.
