Our April tour concentrates on the mainland sites of Greece, with a unique itinerary of the most beautiful sites in the Peloponnese. It's for the those who've seen the main tourist sites but now want to see the "real" Greece of small villages and rare forests. There is an optional extension for first time visitors to one or more of the islands.
Wes and I will help you get from the airport to the hotel. Your tour starts in Athens at our hotel at 5:00 PM. We take a short walking tour of the area around the Acropolis, visiting the scenic Philoppapos and Mars Hills. From there we walk through the tourist street known as the Plaka on our way to our first group dinner. (Our meals are served family style, and Dale does all the ordering for everyone.)
After breakfast in the hotel, we set out for a full day near the Acropolis. We visit the Acropolis itself and finish our morning with a visit to the truly exceptional New Museum of the Acropolis, where the the artistic artifacts recovered from the Acropolis are on display. After lunch and a rest, we make our way to the Agora, the central market place of the city of Athens, and on to our date with our friend Theo and Vahan at their rug shop. After that, dinner in the Plaka and back to the hotel.
After more sight seeing in Athens (your decision of the many things we could see), we catch a ferry to the island of Santorini. We arrive at our hotel on the island in the evening.
We have a full day on Santorini, to include visits to Akrotiri, the Red Beach, and Ea.
We have another half day on Santorini. Then we catch an afternoon ferry to Heraklio in Crete.
We visit Knossos, Phaestos and the resort town of Matala on the southern coast of Crete.
In the morning, we visit the Minoan Museum and the Museum of Ancient Technology in the afternoon, both in Heraklio. We catch an overnight ferry from Heraklio back to Athens.
After our arrival in Athens, we begin our swing through the mainland, starting with visits to the Hellenistic Theater of Epidaurus and Mycenae. We overnight in the quaint resort city of Nafplio.
After our tour of the sites in the Argolid, we cross the Peloponnese to Olympia.
From Olympia, we travel north to Delphi.
After Delphi, we continue north to Kalambaka, the village at the site of Meteora.
After our morning visit of the monestaries at Meteora, we drive north into Macedonia for our stop at Vergina.
At Vergina, we visit the tomb of Philip II. After which we return south, pass by Mt. Olympus, and stop for the night at the resort city of Kamena Vourla
